Perils of social networking

Social-networking tools allow for more free-for-all communication than traditional publishing methods because users can quickly and creatively collaborate. But — interesting conundrums can arise. For example, what would you think if you are using something like Twitter, and a competitor of the organization you work for starts "following" you?

SageCircle recently posted guidelines for analysts who use social media that could apply equally well to individuals or businesses: Why analysts need to be more measured in their use of social media.

I think the people that understand social media would say this is really not a conundrum. We have hundreds of ways of communicating and there is really no reason to put social media in a special category.

If you twitter, its the same as putting it on a web page or talking to a friend in a crowd. The same rules apply. If its confidential you should not be saying it.

The real peril of social media is not confidentiality, it is in companies and people using it incorrectly because they didn't understand the real risks and real rewards.

P.S. The short answer is "let them follow you.  Just because you didn't see them before didn't mean they were not there."
