&lt;p&gt;I think the people that understand social media would say this is really not a conundrum. We have hundreds of ways of communicating and there is really no reason to put social media in a special category.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you twitter, its the same as putting it on a web page or talking to a friend in a crowd. The same rules apply. If its confidential you should not be saying it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The real peril of social media is not confidentiality, it is in companies and people using it incorrectly because they didn't understand the real risks and real rewards.&lt;/p&gt;
